Guide to Better Communication

When communicating with someone who wears a hearing aid or simply has a hearing loss:

  • Get their attention before beginning to speak.
  • Speak face to face. Do not carry on a conversation from another room.
  • Paraphrase if you have to repeat what has been said.
  • Speak at a normal level or slightly louder.
  • Stand within 2 to 3 feet of the listener.
  • Reduce background noise.
  • Avoid appearing frustrated.
